Why Is It Harder to Punch Holes in Ceramic Tiles than on Walls?

2023-08-11

1. The most important thing is that ceramic tiles are difficult to locate. If using an impact drill or a lightweight electric hammer with a continuously variable speed, it is much easier to wear out the surface glaze or polishing layer at a lower speed. If it is stone, especially dry hanging, a glass drill bit (hollow alloy drill bit) must be used to pierce through the stone before continuing to use an impact drill or electric hammer for operation.

2. Ceramic tiles cannot be directly punched with an electric hammer or impact drill, and must be done in two steps.

① Use an electric drill (usually with a flat drill mode for impact drills, and there are also good electric hammers, which must be operated in the flat drill mode) on ceramic tiles, and clip in a dedicated glass/marble hole opener to open the hole.It is necessary to continuously cool the drill bit with water. It is a common method to make a hole in the cap of a mineral water bottle, otherwise it will be difficult to drill and the drill bit will wear out quickly. At first, due to the difficulty in positioning the smooth Tile Drill Bit, a shallow crescent groove can be slowly opened at a 45 degree angle for positioning.

② After drilling through the ceramic tiles, using this drill bit is obviously inefficient, and then using an electric hammer or impact drill. The reason for doing so is: (1) Ceramic tiles are relatively brittle, and the working principle of impact drills and electric hammers is to use one spiral drill while vertically impacting/hammering, which can easily crack the tiles when hit on the tiles. ⑵ The hardness of ceramic tiles is very high, much higher than that of concrete, and ordinary drill bits are very difficult to drill. Moreover, it is still quite popular to use floor tiles for wall decoration nowadays. For example, in my home, we use ceramic tile adhesive to stick vitrified tiles with higher hardness and thickness than ordinary tiles to the wall. It takes more than 10 minutes to drill a hole with an impact drill, and we often crack porcelain. There is also a type of triangular drill bit that claims to be specialized in drilling tiles. I have tried it before, but the effect is not very good and the speed is not fast. The top of the glass drill bit has diamond sand, which is harder than metal, and it is in the form of drilling rather than grinding a hole, which is obviously more efficient and safer.
